Congleton is in North West England. It is situated in the county of Cheshire on the banks of the River Dane, just east of Macclesfield. The town has a estimated population (2001 Census) of 22,763. Congleton is believed to have been a Roman settlement. Congleton was allowed to hold fairs and markets in the Middle Ages because it was granted a royal charter. A mill was constructed after King Edward I gave permission for the town to do so. Congleton traditionally specialized in the making of leather gloves and lace products which led to its becoming very important in the textile industry.
