Runcorn has a population of 61,330 inhabitants; it is an industrial town in the county of Cheshire that lies on the southern banks of the river Mersey. The town's first mention in recorded history was in the year 915AD, when it served as a fortification to protect the north from Vikings. Runcorn consists of 2 parts - the new and old towns. The new town was built during the 1960s to the house overspill from nearby Liverpool and the old town grew up around the Bridgewater canal during the Industrial Revolution.
