St Austell was first referenced by Henry VIII, who referred to it as a town, although he described it as more befitting a village around a church.
The town was originally involved in tin and copper mining. When China Clay was discovered in the hills around the town, clay mining came into its own. By the time of the 19th century values of tin and copper had fallen, which was the cause of the closure of most tin and copper mines in the area. The profits of clay brought many labourers with their families. As a result of this the population and economy of St Austell grew. To date mining employs just 3,000 people; this has decreased massively from when it started. Despite this there is a much higher output than ever before.
