Uxbridge had a population of 60000 as of 2001; it is a town in the county of Greater London. Its name comes from "Wuxen bridge"; the Wuxen were a seventh century Saxon tribe.
The town has been proven to date back to the Bronze Age, as artefacts from around 700BC have been found in the area. There have also been mediaeval remains found at the Chimes shopping centre. In the 19th century Uxbridge was not a popular place to be owing to the notorious locals who would "steal the very teeth from your mouth as you walk through the streets" according to a certain William Arabin.
Uxbridge was primarily involved in the production of flour and ale for the capital, however the last brewery closed in the 1930s. The Grand Union (formerly Grand Junction) canal passes by the town, and acts as the border to the borough of Hillingdon. The canal was instrumental in distributing the products made in Uxbridge around the region.
Many of the modern-day population are employed at Heathrow Airport which is located nearby. Uxbridge is a popular commuter town for central London. There are many popular plumbing companies in the area.
