In the county of Hampshire, 13 miles North-West of Winchester, Andover today is a town of about 40,000 people. The town has been in continuous habitation since Saxon times. During the 18th century, being situated on the main Exeter - Salisbury - London road, Andover became a major stopping point on the stagecoach routes. More than 30 stagecoaches passed through the town each day. In 1789 a canal to Southampton was opened, though this was never a commercial success and closed in 1859. Despite the wool industry's fall into decline, industries like iron works and printing would later come to fruition. Today, light industry is still the primary local business, and many commute the hour and a half train journey to London to work. Many reputable plumbing firms operate in this part of Hampshire.
