Margate is classed as a medium sized town with an estimated population of just fewer than 57,000. Margate is located on the island of Thanet which is in the county of Kent. The town rapidly expanded due to the people of London moving to be beside the seaside. Margate use to have an around 30 pleasure boats in operation going back and forth from the island. The town also had a number of Steamboats operating, and these were so popular that there were 6 different Steamboats working on them in 1841. The steamboats did very well and lasted until 1967 even though there was lots of competition from the railways and road transport. Recently the town has been in a steady decline due to tourists travelling abroad. Therefore unemployment is high and many tourist attractions closing down, such as its theme park, which was also damaged by fire. The local area is well served by a range of successful plumbing contractors.
