Brownhills is a little town lying on the ancient Watling Street in the West Midlands. While the street is old, Brownhills itself is not; it did not exist until the 18th century. Brownhills expanded at a quick rate around the coal mining trade, becoming a centre for the canal and railway networks. Brownhills was also home to the 1st fingerpost in the United Kingdom, which has since been moved to the Earl of Lichfield's Shugborough House. The hamlets around Brownhills which have been taken in by the town hold more historical information. The hamlet of Ogley Hay is a lot older. In Saxon times, it was referred to as "Oogs's Leah" or Ocga Leah" (meaning "Ooga's wood"). This area of Brownhills was in AD 994 said to belong to the Wolverhampton Monastery, and it also receives a mention in the Domesday Book. During the twelfth century Ogley Hay may have been owned by Walsall's Lord of the Manor. Upon the dissolution of the monasteries, Sir William Paget was given the lands by Henry VIII.
